Dock Repair vs. Dock Replacement
A tired-looking dock doesn't always need replacing. A good-looking one isn't always safe. The answer usually lives below the deck.
Start With the Pilings
Pilings carry everything. If most are sound, dock repair — redecking, framing, hardware — can go a long way. If several are compromised, marine piling work can get expensive fast, and dock replacement starts to make sense.
Repair Is Usually Enough When…
- Pilings are solid and plumb
- Problems are mostly decking and hardware
- The dock layout still works for your boat
Replacement Is Usually Smarter When…
- Multiple pilings are damaged
- Framing is deteriorated throughout
- You need a different size or layout, or want to add a boat lift
- The seawall behind it needs major work
Don't Forget the Seawall
Your dock and seawall are connected. Before investing in a new dock, make sure the wall has plenty of life left with a seawall inspection.
