7 Signs Your Seawall May Need Repair
Seawalls rarely fail overnight. They give warning signs — you just have to know where to look. Walk your wall at low tide and check for these.
The Seven Signs
1. Sinkholes or depressions in the yard
Soil is escaping through the wall. The void below is usually bigger than the hole.
2. Gaps between panels
Open joints are the most common path for soil loss.
3. Cracks in panels or cap
Especially wide cracks, or cracks with rust staining.
4. Spalling concrete
Chunks popping off the cap with exposed rebar.
5. Leaning or bowing
The wall rotating toward the water often means anchoring problems.
6. Cloudy water at the wall
Sediment leaking through at low tide.
7. Separation from the deck or yard
A widening gap behind the cap.
Which Signs Are Urgent?
New sinkholes, visible movement and active leaks deserve prompt attention. Hairline cracks can often be monitored. If you're not sure, a seawall inspection will sort it out.
